"I think of this body of work as visual jazz. After several years of figure study, I began to use the figure model and the environment of the room as points of departure for improvisation. This process requires that I relax the habitual controlling grip of my mind and hand to allow a relaxed receptivity and response. There is often a sense of losing myself, as if in a dream where anything or any one of the many selves that lurk within my psyche might appear. Ideally I move beyond known and comfortable familiarities. The resulting possibilities, ambiguous spaces, and hinted-at narratives often surprise even me."
